With diverse backgrounds ranging from EDM, to hip hop, to experimental jazz and R&B, here are this year’s Montreal-based Red Bull Music Academy bass camp attendees. Keep your peeled for these names—they’re about to be huge.CJ Flemings
Echoing the sounds of artists like Drake, Frank Ocean, and Kid Cudi, this versatile rapper and West Island native is on the move. With a new, full-length project titled Forever Wanted More, which dropped this past summer, CJ Flemings (who has been rapping since age 13) is the Red Bull Music Academy’s latest vocalist.
Jeanne Gariépy a.k.a. Gene Tellem is dance music producer, DJ, and co-founder of party series All Good. Through organization and dissection, Jeanne’s process of learning from different worlds and seeking answers in strange places is explored through her productions, which are quickly gaining notoriety alongside her reputation for rocking dancefloors. Jeanne is also one-half of ethereal techno project Loose Excursions.Jesse Futerman
Toronto-born and Montreal-based producer and DJ Jesse Futerman began his musical trajectory at the age of 15 fueled by a love for spiritual jazz and hip-hop instrumentals. After making the transition into house music, Futerman stays loyal to the hip-hop aesthetic, drawing continuously on soul and jazz samples. Futerman’s musical resume is equally impressive as is varied, from collaborations with Brooklyn rapper Haleek Maul and releases on labels like Church and Omena to getting air time from BBC Radio’s Gilles Peterson.Mind Bath
Mind Bath, aka Michael Brock, is a vocalist, producer, and performer. An evocative balance of poetry, big bass lines, and intimate vocals, Brock’s music pays homage to the rawness of youth steeped in a striking viscerality. Due next year is Mind Bath’s second release and first full-length LP, Wild Mother, which is a powerful collection of recordings featuring friends and collaborators Forever, Project Pablo, Aiya, Fariha Roisin, and fellow Bass Camp participants Ouri and Evy Jane.Ouri
South America-born French producer Ouri integrates electronic music into her common practice, which stands against a backdrop of studying cello, harp and piano. Producer of downtempo dance tracks, fluid harmonies and R&B infused ambient techno, her multi-instrumental talents steered her towards electronic music for its unlimited possibilities and unique collaborations. Ouri is a frequent collaborator of fellow RBMA Bass Camp Montréal participant Mind Bath.Valeda
Valeda is a solo project by Cat Lamoureux, stemming from a broader practice that takes shape in various forms. Born and raised in Montreal, music has always occupied a central role in her life, although she didn’t begin producing music until after completing a degree in studio arts. Informed by intuitive teenhood, anger and survival as fantasy, Lamoureux crafts haunting, often delicate multi-layered soundscapes that are punctuated with abrasive stabs of percussion, tense builds and deconstructed elements of club music. Valeda aims to challenge structures and institutions that perpetuate oppressive models of production and consumption.Pascale Project
Pascale Project, real name Pascale Mercier, is a Montreal-born musician formerly known under the moniker Mathematique. Originally a drummer, Mercier has made her mark in a handful of musical landscapes since 2008, releasing a string of EPs and albums that express a symbiotic blend of house and pop. Ultimately, the crux of Mercier’s music rests on her powerful vocals charged with emotive lyrics, which explore themes of love, youth and living in the moment.
