Pitch The Main

Write for The Main

We’re looking for writers that have something to say. If you’ve got a fresh take, a good story, or a guide that will resonate with Montrealers, we want to hear about it. This is for locals by locals, and it should feel that way.

We don’t chase clicks—we back good writing that takes its time, says something real, and reflects the diversity of those who actually live here from seasoned voices and sharp newcomers alike. We’re here for quality over noise, and community over metrics.

What we’re looking for

We focus on Montreal’s local culture and communities, celebrating what’s iconic while shining a light on what’s unknown: A profile of an up-and-coming personality, cultural trends both hardlined in daily life or rising on the fringe, exciting projects from locals, or Montreal history worth exploring.

In addition to new explorations of current institutions, we want to know about the city’s next icons. What are we not talking about in local media that deserves attention? What can we bring to a storytelling landscape that’s saturated with the same old yarns?

Have you noticed a trend that needs deeper exploration or someone doing extraordinary work in a hidden corner of the city?

What we focus on

  • History Lesson: Exploring fascinating, quirky, or overlooked curios from Montreal’s past and present.
  • Arts & Culture: Insights into the people, scenes, and communities at large that are (re)shaping Montreal’s creative landscape in experiential and interactive ways.
  • Food & Drink: Insightful stories about chefs, bartenders, restaurateurs, farms, and every project in between that’s edible.
  • Design: Whether it’s a product, a park, or a public building, this is where we cover the people shaping the way Montreal looks, feels, and functions.
  • Beyond Montreal: Travel-forward pieces that offer something fresh and unexpected, and go beyond typical listicles.

Why you should pitch us

  • Authentic Storytelling: We believe in letting writers’ voices come out naturally and conversationally, creating a refreshing space for contributions.
  • Collaborative Process: You’ll work closely with an editor to refine your story and ensure it resonates with our audience.
  • Compensation: The Main offers payment that is commensurate with the requirements of the assignment and the experience of the writer. Let us know if you're available for photography and/or social content as well.

How to Pitch

Your pitch should answer these questions:

  1. What’s your story or argument? Outline the idea and explain why it matters in a nut graph or two. Be specific about what’s compelling and relevant for Montreal readers.
  2. Why are you the right person to tell this story? Share your background, connection to the topic, and any expertise or experiences.
  3. What’s the unique angle? Explain how this story differs from what’s typically covered in local media and why it fits The Main’s ethos.

Pitches should be concise—just a few paragraphs—and clearly convey your idea. Articles typically run up to no more than 750 words, but length and remuneration can vary depending if the subject matter requires it.

What to Expect

If your pitch is accepted:

  • You’ll collaborate with an editor to develop your piece, with a focus on authenticity and storytelling.
  • We’re here to support your creative process, encouraging you to explore topics you’re passionate about and take risks with your ideas.
  • Your story will undergo editing, fact-checking, and proofreading to ensure it meets our Editorial Standards.
