For over half a century, Centaur Theatre has been the beating heart of Montreal’s English-language theatre scene, staging bold, thought-provoking, and entertaining productions in the city’s historic Old Stock Exchange building. Founded in 1969 by Maurice Podbrey, the company has become a cultural landmark, showcasing a mix of contemporary and classic works that reflect Montreal’s diverse voices and perspectives.

From the groundbreaking Balconville to Schwartz’s: The Musical and Mambo Italiano, Centaur has championed stories that resonate locally while reaching far beyond. Under the leadership of Artistic and Executive Director Eda Holmes, it continues to spotlight both homegrown and international talent, earning accolades such as multiple Montreal English Theatre Awards (METAs) and a reputation as a launchpad for powerful new works.

With two distinct performance spaces—its intimate black box C1 and grander proscenium stage C2—Centaur remains a hub for artistic excellence, pushing boundaries and keeping theatre at the centre of Montreal’s cultural conversation.
