If you want Korean food that doesn’t compromise on tradition, Hansang is the place to go. Opened in 2017 by Mrs. Lee, who runs the kitchen while her children manage the front of house, this Parc Avenue spot sticks to the essentials: bubbling soondubu jjigae, rich and peppery gamjatang, perfectly crisp haemul pajeon, and stone-pot dolsot bibimbap with that ideal crispy rice bottom. Some dishes, like the labour-intensive samgyetang—a ginseng-infused chicken soup believed to restore energy—are nearly impossible to find elsewhere in the city. Every meal comes with a spread of banchan, small side dishes that round out the experience. While Montreal’s Korean food scene has leaned toward fusion in recent years, Hansang stays firmly rooted in tradition, gaining a loyal following among both longtime Korean diners and newcomers eager to explore beyond K-BBQ.
