Romados has been a staple of Montreal’s food scene since 1994, drawing in locals and visitors alike with its signature piri piri chicken, crisp fries, and flaky pastéis de nata. More than just another Portuguese rotisserie, it helped define the city’s love affair with charcoal-grilled chicken, inspiring countless imitators while keeping its own loyal following intact.
The counter-service spot has seen its share of ups and downs, closing in 2020 amid legal disputes, only to be revived under new ownership in 2021. While some wondered if it would ever be the same, the new team, led by former manager George Karaglanis, has stuck to the formula that made Romados a Plateau institution: fiery, spice-brushed birds, hearty chorizo, and one of the best chicken sandwiches in town. The pastéis de nata are still made in-house, and the same smoke-filled air still signals a meal worth waiting for.
A grab-and-go favourite, Romados keeps things simple—order at the counter, watch the grill masters work, and walk out with a feast that’s as consistent as ever. Whether you’re grabbing a full family meal or just a sandwich stuffed with crispy-skinned chicken and slathered in sauce, it’s a spot that continues to define Montreal’s Portuguese food scene.
