In Saint-Ignace-de-Stanbridge, Les Sœurs Racines is a vineyard, farm, and guesthouse driven by values of sustainability and community. Founded in 2017 by Sophie Bélair Hamel and Frédéric Ouellet-Lacroix, this project embodies a deliberate shift toward eco-conscious living and biodynamic agriculture.
The vineyard began with 1,000 vines of Melon de Bourgogne, yielding its first harvest in 2020 for a small-batch collaboration with Brasserie Dunham. Since then, rows of Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Frontenac have been planted, with plans to expand to three hectares. The couple’s dedication to organic and biodynamic practices emphasizes healthy soils and diversity, avoiding the pitfalls of sterile monoculture.
Beyond the vines, the project thrives as a guesthouse featuring three charming rooms, a modern kitchen, and pastoral views. Community support has been key, with a record-breaking crowdfunding campaign funding the construction of their winemaking facility. For Sophie and Fred, this isn’t just a vineyard; it’s a deeply rooted way of life, inviting visitors to connect with the land and its abundance.
